What Scares a Thriller Writer? ‹ CrimeReads

My life mission has always been to be an agitator; to ask questions and provoke introspection. Over the years, what, how, and why I agitate has evolved with my level of consciousness. My mind has changed, but my mission is still the same.

In the last several years, I’ve found my mission to be an agitator directed at making white people uncomfortable. By white people, I’m mainly referring to Americans. (If you want to make a white person from another country uncomfortable, just tell them you’re American 😏).

It is my observation that white Americans have a level of willful ignorance that is only made possible because of privilege. It takes privilege to …

  • Not suffer from not knowing your rights.

  • Not know how a representative republic works.

  • Distort or ignore history to fit your biases (much more on that in a moment!)

  • Not understand where money comes from

  • Not understanding where your food and other natural resources come from

  • Not understanding science and the scientific method

  • Not pay the cost of spreading conspiracy theories and misinformation

  • Have no desire to learn or have your opinions challenged

  • Have no desire to expand your worldview or your vocabulary

  • Have bumper sticker/meme beliefs that don’t align with your actions.

Privilege promotes the absence of critical thinking and curiosity. After all, if the system works for you, what is there to be critical or curious about it?

Of course, these are not exclusive to white people. However, as I’ve proclaimed many times, I don’t speak or write about that which I can not or have not experienced.
